International Night is coming soon!

Please sign up here to participate in one of our favorite events of the school year. Your family will engage with countries from all over the world and be exposed to new food and traditions. So far we have signups from Poland, India, Korea, China, Mexico, Ghana, Romania, Germany, Canada, the UK and Jamaica! We'll have lots of fun activities including Chinese papercraft and henna tattoos. More info here; please sign up to participate and join us on March 13th!

Upcoming author visit alert! Author and award-winning actor Maulik Pancholy will be speaking with our 4th and 5th graders on Wednesday, March 25th, about his middle-grade debut, The Best at It. To learn more and preorder a signed copy of the book from our own Watchung Booksellers, click here and return to your child’s homeroom teacher by Friday, March 6.

School tours are approaching and we’re looking for some enthusiastic parents to help be guides. Watchung will host incoming families on March 12th from 6 - 8 pm. If you’re available and want to help put our school’s best foot forward, please sign-up here on the sign-up genius. Don’t worry if you’ve never done a tour before or don’t feel like you know enough about the school, we’ll schedule training convenient to working parents’ schedules to get everyone up to speed once our volunteers are set. We’re also hoping to include 5th-grade students in our tours this year since they know way more than we do about what it's like to go to Watchung Elementary. If you’ve got a 5th-grader that wants to join you on the tour and show off their inside-Watchung knowledge, please note that in the sign-up genius. Thanks!

Do you have some basic tech skills and a bit of free time? We need a webmaster for the PTA, someone who can work with us to get a new, easier-to-use website in place and oversee it into the next school year. The Montclair PTA Council (PTAC) is switching us over to Wordpress, a much simpler platform, and we need someone to step up as our web contact going forward.

Could this be something you or your partner could take on? It is all done from home and shouldn't be very time-consuming. If so, please email us at Thank you!

Time to get WILD with this year's Wild About Reading Readathon! Students will tally how many minutes they read from March 5-25, and collect pledges to support their efforts! Weekly prizes will be given to the top five students AND the top classes who read the most minutes in their grade categories (K-1, 2-3, 4-5). The students who read the most over all three weeks will be in the running for the randomly-drawn grand prize package including a Watchung Booksellers gift certificate, SkyZone passes and more! The class who reads the most overall wins a class party--the competition can be fierce for the class party, and has come down to just a few minutes in the past. Literally every minute counts and participation is huge!

All the details will be coming home next week in the Readathon packet. This fundraiser is super-fun, and gets kids hooked on reading! We are kicking off the Readathon with a Wild About Reading art contest, entries due March 10th. All reading outside of school counts, and being read TO counts as well! Fourth-grade families: all monies raised by 4th graders goes directly to funding their 5th-grade field trip.

Any questions, please contact Jen Bonnell at or Joanna Desmond at

The Box Tops for Education program is changing the way we can earn cash for Watchung School!

Participating brands have begun to change their packaging from the traditional Box Tops clip to the new Box Tops label.
Going forward, instead of clipping from packages and checking expiration dates, all Box Tops will be earned digitally by scanning your receipt. Simply download the Box Tops mobile app; purchase Box Tops products; scan your store receipt within 14 days of purchase and instantly add Box Tops to Watchung’s earnings online. Earnings are updated automatically at It’s that easy!
If you still have traditional Box Tops clips at home we can still earn cash for all clipped Box Tops until they expire. And, we can “double dip” during the packaging transition by clipping traditional Box Tops AND scanning store receipts containing participating products. The next expiration date is March 1 for traditional Box Tops clips so please continue to send them into your child’s classroom. You may also continue to send them in after March 1 and we can submit them until the traditional program is phased out.

All 5th-grade families should have received information about submitting yearbook photos, please don't forget to send those to

Did you read the email about health precautions that went home last week from the district? Here's an excerpt:

We want to remind parents/guardians to keep their children home when they are ill. Students who are ill with respiratory symptoms, flu-like illness or diarrhea/vomiting should stay home for 24 hours fever-free without fever-reducing medication, and/or 24 hours free of diarrhea/vomiting.

Please call your child’s school to report his/her/their absence, and contact your child’s primary healthcare provider for recommendations.

Here are some upcoming important dates to add to your calendar:
