The past few weeks have been an extremely trying time for our country and members of our community as we deal with both a global pandemic and continued protesting against racial injustice. This has increased conversations in workplaces and dinner tables around topics people may not have felt comfortable approaching before. Thankfully, the appetite to be more open in our discussions about race has led to parents looking for ways to discuss the realities of race in our country to their children. There are a vast number of resources available.
One that we particularly like is this list of books that parents can use to discuss race with their children. In addition to that, we recommend being more intentional in making sure that the stories our kids read and watch represent the diversity we expect them to embrace. Instead of treating diversity and race as a special discussion reserved for serious moments, include books by diverse authors and storytellers on their Netflix watchlists and personal libraries. Again there are many lists available and but you can get started with some of the books on this list from Baristanet or this list of diverse shows for the entire family.
If you have other suggestions, we would love to hear them.
Now, let's get into some other news around the way.
What's Coming Up?
Open PTA Positions (2020-2021)
While there is still a lot of uncertainty as we look to next school year, we're still choosing to remain optimistic looking forward! With that, we want to make sure every family at CHB has an opportunity to get involved. Whether in an executive role, as a committee chair or a volunteer as time permits. Below is a list of open positions we are actively recruiting for. As always, an interest form will be distributed at the beginning of the year as well. These are just some of the key roles we have available now. Do not hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions about any of these roles and what they involve.

Next PTA Meeting
Our next and final PTA meeting of the school year will be Tuesday, June 16th at 6:30PM. Additional information will be coming. The event is currently in the PTA calendar so if you have that synced, then it will automatically update when Zoom info is added.
Each spring, The Montclair Fund for Educational Excellence (MFEE) launches Teacher Toasts, a time when families and staff gather to celebrate the end of another successful school year and thank our teachers. Because our world has changed, our Toasts have to change, but our need to honor, celebrate, and thank our teachers is greater than ever. This year, MFEE is offering two ways to honor your teacher.
Host a Virtual Toast: Choose a special teacher, para, coach, or other community member you would like to honor. Come up with a creative way to do this virtually! Consider a bingo night, a scavenger hunt, a cocktail night or art project party.
Buy a Teacher Tribute: Donate ANY amount to MFEE in honor of a teacher or staff member, and that person will receive a special card notifying him/her of your donation, and you can include a special message!
All funds raised by toasts and teacher tributes will go right back to Montclair teachers in Fall 2020 in the form of teacher grants awarded for innovative ideas. A core priority for MFEE has always been to fund teacher innovation in the classroom, and the single biggest source of this funding is Teacher Toasts. Visit MFEE.org to honor your teachers.

Remote Learning Surveys
We've heard the requests from parents looking to receive a survey from the PTA on our thoughts on remote learning. The concerns were brought up at the latest principal's meeting and the directive was that individual schools should not send them out since the district will be conducting their own.
For everyone that expressed their concerns, suggestions, thoughts, and questions at our last PTA meeting - this will be one of we're sure multiple times to provide input for this important subject.
The department of education has released their survey here. The district's survey will be coming soon. Please use the comments sections to list thoughts and suggestions that you would like known.
If you have a more immediate concern or question, please reach out to your child's teacher and Ms. Kuwabara.
