WEEK #18
January 11, 2022
MLK Day Remembrance and Events
Monday, Jan. 17, 2022
Every year, we honor Dr. King’s legacy with a combination of learning for students and their families, as well as a community service project.
A few important updates:
This year’s event will be virtual. The educational component will focus on the two elements of Social Justice that the kids will be studying this trimester at CHB:Social InjusticeandSocial Movements and Social Change.
We’re planning for a (video) presentation where children can respond with their thoughts using short videos.
Students will also make a corresponding art project in school. (See below for more on art)
For the community service component we’ll package canned goods and toiletries for local organizations that help folks in need.
Your family can help by donating:
- Hats
- Socks
- Gloves
- Hand sanitizer
- Masks
- wipes
- Canned food (fruits, vegetables, beans, soup, fish
- Packaged items (pasta, rice, peanut butter, applesauce, granola bars, cereals)

MLK Art Project
Students will create bookmarks that will be included with our donation packages. These bookmarks will be inspired by the quest for social justice. Remote learners can pickup a blank bookmark for your child to decorate at the same locations.
For students doing in-person learning, we’ll coordinate with the school to have them complete their bookmarks at school next week. If you are virtual and would like to contribute a bookmark, please include it with your donation.
Here are three prompts students can use for their bookmark. Students may choose whichever prompt they like best.
*Create a drawing inspired by your favorite book about social justice
*Create a colorful bookmark that includes any of the following quotes:
Together we will change the world
The time is always right to do what is right
If not us, then who? If not now, then when?
Lastly, if these options don’t work for you, you can donate to our Venmo account @CHB-PTA and designate “MLK” and we will use those funds to support this effort.
