Is financial aid available?
Yes, please contact Ms. Gutierrez.
How will my child get to ASE?
Teachers are given a list of students attending ASE (similar to the bus/aftercare list). At dismissal, those kids are taken to the gym. ASE teachers pick up the kids from the gym close to 3:25pm.
Will ASE be offered later in the year?
Yes, we hope to have a 2nd ASE session starting in late January, early February.
Who plans ASE and can I get involved?
ASE is organized by PTA volunteers and led by community members- reach out if you want to get involved to plan the winter session.

*There have been some last minute changes since our last email! Please note that Beginner Tennis (K-2) will now be held on Mondays and Basketball (K-2) will now be held on Wednesdays.
Registration opens this Friday, September 23rd at 8:00 PM via the online platform Homeroom (https://www.homeroom.com/) and runs through Wednesday, September 28th at 11:59 PM. If you do not already have a Homeroom account, you should register in advance at https://www.homeroom.com/ Once you register, you can find the session by searching for “Charles H. Bullock.”. This session we are offering 18 classes per week (6 classes per day) and classes will fill up quickly!
Beginner Tennis (K-2): Tennis teaches students focus and critical thinking, in addition to being a very fun-filled activity. In CHB Beginner tennis, students will experience eight weeks of tennis drills and games, learn the importance of teamwork, communication, balance, agility, hand-eye coordination, problem-solving and self-reliance. All equipment will be provided by Coach Michele McNeil, a USPTA certified veteran teacher of children who loves working with new students and experienced pros.
Mini-Makers (K-2): CHB is very excited to announce a new collaboration with Mobile Makers! Many students are familiar with the Mobile Maker brand, from pre-school partnerships and/or birthday parties throughout town. In the new ASE edition, Mini Makers will fine-tune their motor skills by exploring the world of sensory art and immersion in a sensory-art-filled-world of their own. Exploration of clay, paint, collage, beading, kinetic sand, colored rice, lentils and more, accompanied by Mobile Makers imaginative themed add-ins from the unicorn, dino, fairy, farm universe! Students will enjoy DIY Crafting and each week they’ll complete a take-home project from start to finish. Note: this Class will take place entirely outdoors. The Mobile Makers Flamingo Trailer will serve as the hub of all creativity. In the event of inclement weather (rain or snow), class will take place inside CHB.
Storybook Theater (K-2): Welcome to Storybook Theater, created by Montclair’s very own Vanguard Theater Company! Students will reenact classic children’s stories through theatrical games, where they’ll pantomime, act – and even sing and dance! All participants will gain physical expression, characterization, social skills, teamwork, memorization, as well as an understanding of classic and contemporary stories in an exciting introduction to performing.
Pickleball (3-5): Have you ever wondered why Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports? Combining elements of tennis and ping pong, pickleball takes some of the best elements of both and makes for an incredibly fun and easy-to-learn sport that is taking the world by storm. Taught by CHB parent Adam Stone who will provide all materials, a pickleball court is one quarter the size of a tennis court, with smaller paddles and lighter balls, making it easier for children to learn and a great introduction to tennis as well.
Pottery (3-5): For all aspiring artists, interested in learning to work with clay, CHB Pottery is the perfect introductory class. Students will explore different types of clay and learn techniques such as pinch pot, coil pot, slab building and more, to develop creative pieces from teacher Kanae Yunome, a long-time ceramic artist and the owner of Potterywise. This is an imaginative, hands-on class that allows students of all ages to enjoy pottery!
Drones (3-5): What’s that up in the sky? It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s a drone! Students will learn different methods of programming to make drones follow directions, from simple to complex missions, to creating code that makes drones dance with you. The final class will be a full-on dance show that parents can attend, where students will perform a drone dance that they’ve coded together. Command It! Code It! Fly It! This class is offered by Hobby Quest.
Joe Fisher Secrets of Magic (K-5): Have you ever wondered how magicians do their magic? Joe Fischer, an entertaining local magician will take you behind the scenes and teach you how to perform interactive magic. You’ll receive your own bag of magic and learn a few new tricks each week!
Arts n’ Crafts (K-1): Does your child love to craft? Arts n’ Crafts, taught by former CHB teacher and current CHB parent Elena Dahsiell, features a variety of engaging project-based crafts, inspired by student interests. Students will experiment with perler beads, jewelry making, recycled paper journals, store front dioramas, simple sewing, mask making, messy art, tie-dye, treasure boxes and popsicle stick homes. No prior art experience is needed and all students will complete a weekly craft for proud display.
Fun with Running (K-2): Get ready for your child to learn the fundamentals of track and field, including speed, strength, endurance, and classic schoolyard games! Classes feature structured warm-ups/stretching and skill-building running workouts, and students will learn the basics of the turbo javelin, long jump, shot put and classic school yard. Taught by Brad Barket, an experienced coach with Montclair Running Co.and a veteran at teaching track and field.
Mixed Media & Recycled Art (3-5): Your child will have fun creating Mixed Media Works of ART using Natural, Recycled & Traditional Art/Crafting Materials. Each week Artist/Instructor Lovlee Tang will explore a different style of artistic expression with your child. Children will be encouraged to work at their own level. Your child will have fun creating art & building friendships while enhancing their self-confidence as a Young Artist!!
Taekwon-do (3-5): Is your child interested in trying taekwon-do for the first time or have they taken classes in the past and would like to begin again? Students will work on cooperation and leadership skills in addition to learning the focus, discipline and self-control of Taekwon-do. They’ll have the chance to spar and learn both self-defense and courtesy with Master John Meany, a 7th Degree black belt with over 25 years of experience practicing and teaching. No prior experience is necessary and all are welcome.
CHB Buzz Just the Facts (3-5): Ever wonder how journalists know they’re on the trail of a good story? Explore the world of journalism and learn to dissect the news. Pick a beat to cover, brainstorm ideas, learn how to research, practice your interviewing skills and study leads, nuts ‘grafs’ and kickers. Taught by CHB parent and veteran journalist Jaime Bedrin, all CHB reporters will draft an article and contribute to an issue of the CHB paper! Repeat students are welcome.
Basketball (K-2): If you’ve been searching for a class that teaches students the necessary skills to improve their game, look no further! A mixture of high-energy skills, drills and teamwork helps students learn how to play and participate in friendly competition. This class will emphasize the fundamentals, including lessons on ball handling, shooting and passing and modified game play. Co-taught by two CHB teachers, Mr. Araton and Ms. Hardin, no experience is necessary, and the only requirement is a desire to have lots of fun.
Hip-Hop (K-2): Are you looking for a fun class, featuring music kids love that is a perfect fit for beginners and students who have some dance experience? Practice basic breakdancing moves, including pop, lock, street and breakdancing throughout this eight-week course. Students will learn a combination of body control and trending dance moves, taught by an instructor from Beyond the Boogie dance studio in Upper Montclair. Hip Hop dancing is a phenomenal cardiovascular workout that challenges both body and mind.
Yoga (K-2): Do you believe in the power of yoga? If you’re looking for a fun and creative way for your child to build strength and balance, this is the class for them! Experienced yoga teacher and Montclair mom Lynn Tretola teaches important skills both on and off the mat. Students will learn to hold a plank and stand up for what they believe in, along with the flexibility to master splits and adapt to unexpected change. All students will enjoy the many benefits that yoga has to offer.
Intro to Digital Photography (3-5): Is your child a budding Ansel Adams? In Intro to Digital Photography, students will be given cameras and taught shutter speed, aperture, ISO and composition. Photo review sessions will be held with classmates for discussion and critique. Taught by an instructor from New Moon Photography, for students’ final projects, they will select their favorite photo to be framed and taken home.
Playwriting (3-5): Welcome to the launch of CHB’s first original playwriting course! Students will learn to observe the world for meaning, build characters, place characters in settings, write monologues, create dialogue and lay the groundwork for longer works. For the finale, parents will be invited to watch them perform their own play. This class is offered by Montclair’s newest theater, the Vanguard Theater Company, which moved to Montclair in 2020 and is located walking distance from CHB.
